Linux 2.6.8 and I
A few days ago, I started to compile Linux kernel on one of my tested machine. today, after the fourth attempt, suddenly it works..what a miracle.. :DI decided to try compiling the kernel during USM convocation..but because during that time, I really busy, so, I keep postponing the event (maybe because of that the kernel didn't like me.. :) )..
during the first attempt compiling the kernel, lilo cannot accept my kernel because the kernel's size is too big..that's still okay and i compiled it for the second time..still big, lilo said..what the heck? i managed to reduce the size from 5 MB to 4 MB..(yeah, i know..use bizImage and do not use vmlinuz..but i don't know about it at that time)..the third time i manage to reduce the size from 4 MB to 2 MB..how? i'll try my best to change all the features to module (and that include ext2, ext3 and reiserfs support - i know now, if you can don't compile filesystem support into modules)..and lilo manage to accept the kernel..because i'm soo happy i didn't know that it replace the 2.4.26 kernel in my system..during the boot time, opps! kernel panic happened..hahaha..the what i do? i reformat the machine..i installed back slackware 10..gone the customized script that i write for the machine, and all the applications i installed in the machine..then, this morning, i manage to compile the kernel..after i read the README file included in the package, suddenly i ter-read just copy the bizImage file in boot directory into /boot directory..hehehe...stupid me because not throughly read the README file..after configuring lilo (by the way, i backup the 2.4.26 kernel image for the first time before i compile 2.6.8.1 kernel), i reboot the machine..i choose 2.6.8.1 options and wow!, it's works..now my machine run on 2.6.8.1 kernel..now i want to test this kernel in cluster environment..by the way, the kernel is compile specifically for Pentium III processor.. :)

4 kali oklah tu :). btw, u can compile fs support into the kernel itself. "kernel's size is too big" is not about lilo can't accept big size kernel, its just that the kernel wont fit into a floppy disk :D
steps i always use to compile linux kernel (2.6.x):
# cp linux-version.tar.bz2 /usr/src; cd /usr/src
# tar xjf linux-version.tar.bz2
# ln -s linux-version linux
# cp .config linux/.config (.config from working kernel)
# cd linux
# make oldconfig
# make; make modules_install
# cp System.map /boot/System.map-version
# cp arch/i386/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-version
# cd /boot
# rm System.map (u may want to rename it instead of delete it)
# ln -s System.map-version System.map
Edit /etc/lilo.conf
# /sbin/lilo
# reboot
hope it helps and its not the only way of compiling linux kernel, it depends of many factors/situations. g'luck ;)

typo error:
# cp arch/i386/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-version (wrong)
# cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-version (correct)
hmmm...what to try next? if u are talking about the cluster, u can try con kolivas's kernel patch.
g'luck

Lilo sux man. Try replacing it with Grub. Anyway, welcome to the 2.6 club (finally... lambat gile ko). Do try Doc Kolivas's staircase and see if you get performance boost from his "compute scheduler" mode.
hehehe...tak pe..biar lambat asalkan selamat..aku tak play around lagi dgn slackware tuh..cadangnya nak main-main dgn slackware tuh dulu sblm install dlm server..maknanya aku akan test banyak application dlm tuh ler..tp tak sempat ler skrg..banyak keja..skrg tgh tulis 2 paper + 2 report + isi 2 form.. :D
